MenMales and WomenFemales (ts)

Overview

  • have a core sense of gender, which crosses the known sex binary (male/female) or is outside it completely, hence the term trans-gender
  • recognise a multiplicity of genders
  • have a core sense of gender which fits with the known sex binary (male/female)
  • have an innate sex which is 100% the opposite to their body's phenotype

The gender binary

  • cannot situate themselves completely within either the male category nor the female category
  • describe themselves on a gender continuum with 'degrees of difference'
  • situate themselves within a continuum of many genders
  • situate themselves within the known sex binary (male/female) - female or male
  • describe themselves to be a man or a woman within their own cultural standards

Pronouns

  • pronouns: zie, hys, zir, zhe, sir, he, hym, as well as the usual, she, he, him, his
  • for men: he, his, him
  • for women: she, her

Transition and Treatment

  • make use of a range of social, hormonal and surgical options to express their gender and relieve their physical discomfort
  • decisions depend on the individual's personal sense of self, bodily comfort and self-identity
  • desire conclusive medical treatment as best as can be achieved for them (financially, medically, etc)
  • seek the remedy of rehabilitative sex affirmation treatment (being those hormonal and surgical procedures sometimes described as sex reassignment) to bring their physical body into harmony with their innate (core) brain-sex to achieve a sense of personal unity and peace

Visibility

  • often feel the 'invisibility' of their selves is problematic
  • often prefer to be visibly transgender
  • view their 'invisibility' in a positive light
  • feel a sense of relief when they are finally visible as the sex to which they belong

Role of medical intervention

  • are often uncomfortable (or even resent) being pathologised or medicalised to get medical assistance
  • often consider the clinical aspects of the transition process is problematic
  • welcome the role of the health care provider to help correct their physical appearance
  • strongly desire rehabilitative sex affirmation treatment (hormonal and surgical procedures) to resolve their situation
  • consider the clinical aspects of the process will confirm what they have always experienced to be true and are relieved there are medical solutions to their discomfort

place of identity

  • value the idea of being 'transgender' as an identity in itself
  • transgender identity is akin to that of other minority groups or communities of difference in society
  • seeks the 'identity' of the sex to which they rightly belong (man/woman, male/female)
  • 100% of this group desires legal correction of their innate (core) sex
  • transsexualism is not an identity it is a medical condition
