We want to do what we can to help you 'stay safe' online. Two main things to keep in mind are: Take care when revealing personal details to 'just-met' friends. Here at the atsn we place a strong emphasis on meeting people face to face in public. Keep in mind, you don't really know who these people. When you meet face to face, you should do this in a public place and take a friend along. You shouldn't be paranoid, but don't be silly with your personal information, either. Sometimes it's better to get to know someone better over time, before sharing personal information (like your full name, place of employment, phone number, and street address, etc.) Use a "clean" email addressWhen mailing to unknown parties; posting to newsgroups, mailing lists, chat rooms and other public spaces on the Net; or publishing a Web page that mentions your e-mail address, use a free (advertising-supported) e-mail service provider like Yahoo Mail or Hotmail. Email addresses that are posted in 'public' or 'semi-public' spaces like egroups, can be easily discovered by spammers (online junk mailers) and added to their list of targets. If your this 'public' address gets spammed enough to become annoying, you can simply kill it off, and start a new one. Your friends, boss, etc., will still know your "real" address. Further Reading |
